Jean Jacques Henner (French, 1829-1905) Two studies for St. Catherine, circa 1903 Chalk on paper 7-1/8 x 3-3/4 inches (18.1 x 9.5 cm) (sight, largest) Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Shepherd Gallery, New York; Acquired by the present owner from the above, 2003. EXHIBITED: Shepherd Gallery, New York, "19th Century European Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture," May 6-June 29, 2003, no. 18. LITERATURE: E. Kashey, ed., 19th Century European Paintings, Drawings, and Sculpture, exhibition catalogue, New York, 2003, no. 18, illustrated; I. de Lannoy, Catalogue raisonné Jean Jacques Henner, vol. 2, London, 2008, p. 274, no. C.1394, illustrated (left image). The present works are done on the verso of two sheets of a letter from Henner's dealer, Charles Pitet, dated July 10, 1903. Pitet lists the prices for eleven commissioned paintings, among them Femme en bleu tenant une roue (Woman in blue holding a wheel), almost certainly a Saint Catherine type, with the overlapping figure sketches seen here serving as preparative studies. In the Catholic tradition of depicting saints alongside the objects of their martyrdom, Catherine is generally accompanied by the wheel upon which she was broken. We thank Isabelle de Lannoy for her gracious cataloguing assistance. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
