He began painting in his mid-30's while recovering from an illness. Bowling studied with Alexandre Hogue, Frank Klepper, and Olin Travis at the Art Institute of Dallas, where he later taught. Eventually, this group would become known as the Dallas Nine, making Dallas one of the most dynamic centers of American Regionalism during the 1930s and 1940s.
