Property from a Southern California Collector Mankowitz’s photographs of The Rolling Stones are equally important, both as portraits of the band and as a sustained visual record of their emergence as one of the defining cultural forces of the 1960s. He began working with the Stones in 1965, while still in his teens, and his first session produced an album-cover image for Out of Our Heads (used for December’s Children in the United States). Its success led to an invitation to accompany the band on their six-week, 36-city American tour that autumn, where Mankowitz photographed them not only performing but traveling and relaxing away from the stage. He subsequently became their official photographer, creating images for albums including Between the Buttons, Got Live If You Want It! and Big Hits, as well as press and publicity photographs, until 1967. This prolonged access gave Mankowitz something rarer than a single iconic sitting: the opportunity to document the Stones as their image evolved from rebellious young rhythm-and-blues musicians into international rock stars. His famously hazy Between the Buttons cover, photographed on Primrose Hill at dawn after an all-night recording session, pushed rock photography beyond straightforward publicity portraiture toward an atmospheric expression of the psychedelic era. Collectively, Mankowitz’s Stones photographs helped establish the visual language through which the band—and, more broadly, the rebellious glamour of 1960s rock culture—would be remembered.
