Property from a Southern California Collector Gered Mankowitz’s photographs of Jimi Hendrix were made at a pivotal moment, when Hendrix was transforming from a startling new arrival on the London music scene into an international icon. Mankowitz photographed Hendrix and the Jimi Hendrix Experience during two sessions at his Mason’s Yard studio in London in early 1967, producing both intimate solo portraits and group studies. Hendrix had arrived in Britain only months earlier, and Mankowitz’s restrained studio setting placed the emphasis on the musician himself—his extraordinary clothes, commanding physical presence, and mixture of confidence and introspection. Although the black-and-white portraits were not widely used when they were made, they acquired far greater visibility in later decades, appearing on books, magazines, exhibitions, and the early-1990s remastered Hendrix CDs. Their importance lies partly in this remarkable timing: Mankowitz caught Hendrix just before Are You Experienced and the guitarist’s subsequent international breakthrough transformed him into one of rock music’s defining figures. Mankowitz’s portraits have since become among the most recognizable photographs of Hendrix, preserving not the spectacle of his stage performances but the charisma and individuality of the man himself.
