Alex Katz (b. 1927) Untitled, 2003 Oil on board 16 x 12 inches (40.6 x 30.5 cm) Incised with signature and dated in center: Alex Katz / 03 PROVENANCE: Lillian Heidenberg Fine Art, Brooklyn, New York; Private collection, Quebec, Canada, acquired from above. Untitled from 2003 reflects Katz's sustained interest in renewing the conventions of portraiture through contemporary subjects. The sitter's direct gaze and frontal pose recall the formality of traditional portraits, while the T-shirt and casually held cup place the figure firmly in everyday life. Warm ochre tones define the face and arms against a dark shirt and pale background. Katz's brushwork remains visible throughout, giving particular attention to the clasped hands and expression. His ability to capture a likeness through assured brushwork and broad areas of color has made his portraits among the most recognizable in postwar American painting.
