Max Pechstein (German, 1881-1955) Schnapsbude, 1909 Brown ink and pink and yellow crayon on paper 5-7/8 x 7-1/4 inches (14.9 x 18.4 cm) (sheet) Inscribed lower left: Schnapsbude / alles rohes Holz mit / hellblauen Wänden Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Sotheby's Arcade, New York, October 5, 1988, lot 61; Acquired by the present owner from the above. This drawing is listed as an autograph work by Max Pechstein in the documentation of the Max Pechstein Urheberrechtsgemeinschaft under the title Schnapsbude from 1909. It belongs to a series of works created in the summers of 1909, 1911, and 1912 in Nidden on the Curonian Spit. In correspondence between William Glaser and the artist's son, Max K. Pechstein, dated December 3, 1990 and February 8, 1991, Pechstein confirmed the drawing's attribution to his father. Amazingly, Pechstein noted that although the present work was created in 1909, it had remained unknown to him prior to contact with Glaser in 1990.
