Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Private collection, Newport, Rhode Island; R.J. Barron, Boston, Massachusetts, acquired from the above; Acquired by the present owner from the above, 1985. Lear scholar Vivien Noakes, writing to the collector on December 6, 1985, noted that Lear only worked in sepia ink for his so-called "Tennyson series," of which she suspected this to be an early example, despite observing the apocryphal inscription at lower left. For years, Edward Lear workshopped illustrations to accompany the publication of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's Poems. In support of his friend Tennyson, Lear created around 300 drawings, but the ambitious project was never fully realized, and the present work was never used. Poems was finally published in 1889, not long after Lear's death, but included only 16 engraved plates.
