Williams, ed., Drawings by Fragonard in North American Collections, exhibition catalogue, Washington, D.C., 1978, pp. 56-61. George Hellman acquired the present work, among many others, along with the sketchbook of Jean-Honoré Fragonard; the Verdier drawings had been pasted inside by a young Fragonard. While at first assumed, or hoped, to also be the work of Fragonard, the Verdier drawings were removed from the sketchbook (which itself now resides in the Fogg Museum at Harvard University) and sold separately over the course of the 20th century, enjoying renewed academic interest starting in the 1970s. Other examples from the Hellman group were examined by Jacob Bean of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Eunice Williams of the Fogg; both scholars determined that they were the work of Verdier. In a letter to William Glaser dated March 30, 1998, Pierre Rosenberg of the Louvre also firmly attributes the Hellman drawings to Verdier. Jean-Claude Boyer suggested an attribution to Louis Licherie in a letter dated January 29, 1996, but this supposition was not supported by the other scholars consulted.
