The "Spruce Goose," officially the Hughes H-4 Hercules, was a massive flying boat designed and built by Howard Hughes during World War II. Despite its nickname, it was primarily constructed from birch wood due to wartime metal restrictions, not spruce. The aircraft, which was intended for military transport, only flew once, for a short duration, on November 2, 1947 and is now on display at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon.
