A Kava Bowl, yaqona Fiji, c. mid 19th century Hardwood (vesi or Afzelia bijuga), with notched rim, on four legs, V-shaped suspension plug in form of a stylized animal or turtle head. The interior with extensive traces of kava patina and a partly legible inscription in India ink "Kava...Hagona bowl...". In good condition, appropriate for age, origin, use, and material. One leg shorter than the others, one leg with old chip, superb deep shiny brown patina on underside and legs from handling. Provenance: A Private Collection, New York, NY, acquired in 1990 Christie's London, Tribal Art, July 3 & 4, 1990, lot 72 James T.
