A Dayak Mask, Hudoq Borneo, Indonesia, c. early 20th century An older example, painted with enamel paints in red, black, and white. Hinged lower jaw. The ears with large horns at top and smaller ones at bottom. The large circular eyes with residue of resin used to secure mirrors or other reflective pieces now missing. The back with dark patina from storage and use, the nails securing the ears rusted. A basketry cap of woven cane with thin wood tendrils. A bite stick at back (the dancer would grip in teeth to hold mask on) threaded through holes at side of mouth. In good condition, appropriate for age, origin, use, and materials; tip of chin eaten away but painted over, a chip from upper left side of back (not visible from the front).
