A Hemba Stool Fragment Democratic Republic of Congo, c. early 20th century Blackened wood, lower bodies, legs and feet eroded away. Back to back figures, a bearded male one side, queen mother on other. The queen mother with distinctive double loop scarification marks on belly. The faces of both sensitively carved with delicate facial features including half-closed downcast eyes, slender nose, and slightly smiling mouth. The skillful carving of the faces is in contrast to the amateurish carving style of the arms and hands raised to support the circular seat. A fragment. Custom Lucite stand.
